WHAT i’M PLAYING

I’m overdue for an update. What have I been playing?

Shadow Complex
My last update consisted of a Review for Shadow Complex. I revisited this game after it was re-released on the Xbox One, re-mastered. You can check it out here.

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare
I finished the campaign for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. As I’m not an “online competitive gamer” I’m typically a year behind on Call of Duty games. The campaigns are usually solid, but since I’m not mad crazed over the online competition, picking the game up at full price is usually not worth it. And since I’ve been know to write reviews well after the game becomes irrelevant, there’s no incentive in picking up the game at release, when I have so much else to play. Expect a review soon.

Mad Max
Mad Max was a great game, so expect a review for it soon. It also has a photo editor, so I’ll be adding a gallery to the in-game photo section. I can’t speak highly enough about how fun this game was. It did have some drawbacks, mainly about the length of the game and size of the word, and boring busy-body side-missions, but nothing felt better than taking on a convoy, and ripping people out of their vehicles with the toe-cable.

Lords of the Fallen:
As one of  March’s Xbox Free Games With Gold, I gave this a try. It’s sort of a poor-man’s Dark Souls. This should probably be under the “What I’m No Longer Playing” section, but I don’t have one of the those.

EA SPORTS Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR
I don’t know what it is about golf games, but they are addictive. I’ve completed the main tour, and I’m working on some of the side mini-games. Review soon – it’s not as bad as some have made it out to be, but it is definitely lacking in some areas. But the same complaint can be made towards every single EA “next-gen” launch/transition titles.

NEED FOR SPEED
A re-branding or re-imagining of sorts, EA has been a fun game to play over the past while. Pundits will complain about Live Action cutscenes, but these don’t deter from the final product. At launch the game was limited, but since then EA has updated the title with some fresh new vehicles and gameplay modes, as well as bolstering the online environment, allowing others to join in on the campaign races, as it is a populated world. So now that the game is considered complete, I’ll write a review for it.

Tom Clancy’s The Division
Holy cow have I been playing this game a lot and I’ve been having a lot of fun. It even inspired me to create a journal/diary to the game. You can check that out here. Only 5 entries as of this post, but I hope to continue it more as I progress through the campaign.

DIRT Rally
I just picked this game up before the weekend, so I haven’t had the chance to fully dive into it yet, but expect some more info throughout the week, and in-game photos. So far its very good looking (not as great as I’d hoped) and its not easy to jump right into, and requires patience to master, which I appreciate.

Hitman
Deciding to release this game as Episodic was an interesting choice. Not sure if it’s because the game is incomplete or they’re wanting to spread out the title so that it’s not immediately forgotten after the launch window. It might be a smart choice. Either way it looks fantastic, with beautiful environments and lighting. And it actually allows the player to focus on each mission, playing it numerous different ways while we wait for the next episode.

Rocket League
A fun local and online soccer game with cars. I’ve been playing online with ILLESTRADER and I started up the season mode locally to try and knock off some achievements. Fun times had by all.

Well that’s no short list. Hopefully I’ll be able to knock some of this stuff off the list before month end.

In other news, E3 is around the corner in June and I am super stoked. Some of the developers have decided not to have their big conference at E3 and instead have decided to host it the day before – most notable EA. Last year Bethesda hosted theirs the day before and they’ll be doing so again, but this year EA is following suit and hosting their EA Play event. Either way I’ll be watching  and blogging. Its and exhausting 2 days of conferences, but I love it. Expect lots of news on June 12 and 13

Take care,

150,000G Live Blog

So today, being Sunday, the achievements of the week day, I’m doing something unique: a live blog to celebrate reaching 150,000G. It’s not a large number, by some achievement hunting standards, but it’s a milestone nonetheless. A lot higher than the averages, that’s for sure.

Last week I was at 149,337. This was a frustrating number because it ended in a 7. This off number was thanks to Mad Max with its 3 and 8G achievements.

This weekend I played some more Rayman Legends and beat Call of Duty Advanced Warfare. Which brought me up to 149,937G. So today my goal is to round off the number to a 5 or 0 and then wrap up the remaining amount and land perfectly on 150, 000g. As they come in I’ll be posting an update. Wish me luck.

///

2:30pm – Mad Max:

Doing Gutgash a BigFavor (Build two projects in Gutgash’s stronghold) – 3G

Alright, off to a good start. I got my numbers round again. Now I can just focus on regular achievements.

Now it gets stressful, because any random achievement can pop now and may throw off the number or accidentally bump me over.

4:45PM – EA Sports UFC 2:

On the Rise (Won The Ultimate Fighter competition in your career) – 25G

4:52PM

Surprise! (Something unexpected happened during your career) – 15G

5:00PM

The First Step (Open your first Fight Pack in UFC Ultimate Team) – 10G
Well this is it. 149,990G. Guess I gotta decide what achievement I want and what game to unlock it in, keeping in mind to only get one that’s worth 10g and no more. And hopefully I don’t unlock anything else accidentally.

*update* issue of note. I’ve unlocked the UFC achievement bt it hasn’t reflected on my overall score. I’m sitting at 980 still. 😦

*update* this issue fixed itself when I unlocked the next achievement.

5:51PM – Supreme Commander 2

Start Here (Complete both parts of the tutorial) – 10G

I figured I’d give some honour to Supreme Commander 2 on the Xbox 360 as it was one of the free games of the month. I started playing it online last night with ILLESTRADER in online co-op, taking on some AI bad guys and learning how the game played.

///

Well that was fun. The day is no where near over, so I’m just on a go back to playing more games.

IDL NEWS – The Crew Wild Run, Cities Skylines, EA And Star Wars Battlefront

After a fun jaunt down to Seattle, it’s now back to reality and all things video game. Gears Of War Ultimate Edition arrived in the mail yesterday, as did the Day One edition of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – very excited to try these. I’ll be jumping right into MGS V so expect my impressions throughout the week.

I have lots of news to catch up on, I apologize as some might be older, and new games, deals, etc. Lets go!

The Crew Wild Run

Released in November, The Crew Wild Run expansion seems pretty beefy. They’re re-releasing The Crew with the expansion, but no word yet on the DLC and price.

Notable inclusions:

  • Engine sounds have been reworked
  • UI is getting tweaked
  • Car dynamics and handling have been improved
  • Dynamic weather will be added
  • FreeDrive Stunts and the ability to create your own races will be added
  • Motorcycles
  • Monster Trucks
  • Dragsters
  • Drift cars
  • Recurring Championship festival: The Summit
  • Upgraded graphics

Cities: Skylines Expansion

Cities: Skylines has a new expansion coming out, titled After Dark. The new expansion introduces a new day-to-night cycle and with it comes new specialized areas, city services, transportation systems, graphics enhancements, and citizen behaviour. Might have to jump back in. Sept 24th release.

EA Access Backwards Compatibility

EA said that it is investigating adding backwards compatible EA games to the EA Access in the future. November at the earliest when the Backwards Compatibility will launch.

EA has a long list of Xbox 360 games that could potentially be added to the Vault, including the Mass Effect trilogy, Battlefield 3, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Skate 3, and Burnout Paradise.

star-wars-battlefront-offers-first-look-at-fighter-squadron-mode-488398-2Star Wars Battlefront, Sans Server Browser

DICE confirmed today that Star Wars Battlefront will not have a server browser, like in previous Battlefield games, but instead will use a new skill-based matchmaking system to match online players.

EA also announced that a Star Wars Battlefront beta for PS4, Xbox One, and PC will be available in early October.

Evolve – Free Weekend

Evolve will be free for all this weekend on the Xbox One and PC. It includes all the hunters and monsters and unique skins. Those who play it will retain all their experience if they choose to buy it, and those who own it will get the chance to maybe try out some new hunters or monsters, and will get to keep the new skins.

New Games – Aug 25 – Sept 1

Mad Max (Xbox One, PS4, PC) – I got hand’s on with Mad Max over the weekend, and it felt really cool to play. Driving and melee feel really good, and the game looks gorgeous. I had some reservation during my time with it, but only a proper play through will due for my proper opinion.

IGN posted a cool time lapse of the two-hour day and night cycle:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Xbox One, PS4, PC) – This is my go to game for the next week. I briefly started it last night, so expect opinions daily into next week. I’m super stoked.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC) – I played this game back on the Xbox 360 and thought it was a lot of fun. A quite somber tale of two brothers and their messed up world. Sad and tragic, but vast and beautiful. This looks to be the next-gen release of it.

Until Dawn (PS4) – Playstation’s big notable horror game. i don’t really know anything about it though as I’m not a PS gamer. Getting very good reviews.

Dishonored: Definitive Edition (PS4, Xbox One) – Unnecessary HD remaster of one of last gen’s great games. My original review: here.

Mega Man Legacy Collection (Xbox One, PS4, PC) – Reproduction of the classic series original six titles.

The Deer God (Xbox One, PC) – Xbox’s Free game of the month for September. I got it last night and will be including my impressions when I get to it. The title looks very cool, as an indie platformer, and not of the typical shooting variety.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (Xbox One) – Yep. Full remastering of the classic original on the Xbox 360. The game that sold consoles. This edition includes all the multiplayer maps and skins and DLC and the Window’s exclusive story chapters. Excited isn’t sufficient. This game is a game-night staple.

Phew. Well that’s all for tonight. More tomorrow as I continue to go through MGS V and leave my impressions from PAX Prime 2015 and Gears of War this weekend.

IDL FEATURE – PAX Prime Day Three: Mad Max, Gabe & Tycho, and QWOP

-Day Three is here, the last full day of PAX before everyone heads home. Today was another solid day of cosplay and panels.

DAY 3 – PAX Prime 2015

-Today the plan was to attend a few more panels, explore the rest of the exhibition halls, and play some games. Breaking our fast early we head off in different directions. 2 of the group wanted to check out the Dark Souls III line, myself and the lady willing to hit the 6th floor to see the smaller devs, and stores. I still haven’t located the RTX merch booth though. Strange, they may not be here.

IMG_5047

-The plan was to meet up at the Benaroya Hall for the Gabe and Tycho Q&A #2, around noon for the 12:30 panel. The panel was presented in FULL DOLBY ATMOS, and started off with the Star Wars Battlefront Hoth demo trailer in full volume. It was quite the visual and audible spectacle. Gabe and Tycho took the stage in epic fashion, and proceeded to answer prepared questions for a prompt hour, bowing and leaving.

IMG_5052

IMG_5055-We then headed off for a bite of lunch on our way back to the main building. We split up again, as the other group wanted some Dark Souls III hands-on and the leftovers left to wonder the halls to see what else was exciting.

-We stopped by the Twitch booth for a bit and laughed as a few contestants failed at QWOP, and then sat for a bit in the Xbox lineup featuring Mad Max.

-Mad Max is a fun game. It looks gorgeous. An open world game set in the desert wasteland. Not tied to the movie, we play Max, just trying to survive. The world is littered with strongholds, and enemy convoys. The game heavily features driving, vehicular combat, and hand-to-hand combat. The demo crew presented us with two options: take down a stronghold, or take down a convoy. I chose the stronghold.

IMG_5061

-Starting up the game, we’re dropped into our vehicle and asked to reach an elevated look-out point. Right away in the vehicle, the game plays nice, but the controls seem a little counter-intuitive, so it may take some getting used to. The vehicle feels a little sluggish and floaty when trying to attempt precision moves, but we also have our very own War Boy in the back to man the grappling hook. The tow cable allows us to bring down sniper towers, or pull down walls. A neat mechanics and fun. It is Left Bumper to aim and this slows the world down, and B to shoot. Right Trigger is used for acceleration in a vehicle or running on foot. On foot, B to shoot feels weird as LT to aim and RT to shoot is so ingrained, but the controls are consistent throughout, so once I’m used to it, it’ll be fine.

-After fending off some enemy vehicles, we reach the bridge and scope out the stronghold with our binoculars. Back in the car, we race towards the sniper tower, attaching our tow cable and tearing it down. It feels nice when the line goes taught as it feels like we actually hooked something with weight, and can watch the car struggle to pull it over.

-Driving through a couple smaller turret towers and we’ve reached the front gates. Lined with guys, there’s a couple different routes we can take, but I spot two propane canisters and rip them off the wall with the car’s tow cable, and the wall is free of enemies. Next step is the wall itself, and then I’m on foot, vaulting over a barricade and run face to face with a large group of weapon wielding enemies waiting inside.

IMG_4887

-Mad Max’s fist to fist combat feels reminiscent of the Arkham games. X to punch a bunch, Y to deflect or block when indicated, and occasionally a finisher move will present itself. It works the same with a melee weapon in your handf, or you could clear house with the shotgun which felt powerful. The grenade-tipped spears are handy, and can be thrown at groups of enemies or into barrels for huge explosions. This is how we take down the strong hold in the end, and walk away, never looking back.

-This build felt really solid, only lacking some polish and refinement. This was a stand-alone demo, so it’s hard to say how close this was built to the final gold game, as it launches this Tuesday. Fun nonetheless, just was not given any indication of story, or length of the game.

-Everyone met up again at the Skybridge at 4PM, and we closed the afternoon off fairly early, as 2 of the group were leaving tonight. We saw some more cosplayers on the way out, and upon leaving the convention hall, spotted the whole fleet of Mad Max UBER vehicles, with the warriors standing on top for photo ops. WITNESS ME!!!

IMG_5070IMG_5069 IMG_5068

IMG_5067 IMG_5066

IMG_5075 IMG_5081

-Back at the hotel we chilled for a bit to rest our weary legs, and played some Xbox games to relax. The 2 leaving said their goodbyes, and myself and the girlfriend left again for the evening to get some dinner and watch the Late Night Dub Fights. Dinner at the Sport Pub and then a quick walk to the Monorail and on to the convention hall, arriving breathless with barely enough time. We were 2 of the last 10 to enter the hall, and sat at the back.

-The Lat Night Dub Fights is a group of panelist voice dubbing over terrible old cartoons, commercials, and TV show clips. Totally improve, the evening is filled with laughs and a few embarrassing groans. Wrapping up right before 11PM, we jog back to the Monorail to catch the last train, and close out the evening.

-Last day is tomorrow, day 4, and then sad goodbyes to PAX 2015. I’m looking forward to a relaxing drive back home, assuming the wind hasn’t impacted our route.
