Showing Off & Moving On

The summer isn’t a very productive time for me. I work all day on the computer, so at the end of the day it’s hard to find the motivation to sit back down in front of the computer again into the late hours of the evening. Plus during the summer, with the heat, I’d rather do anything else than sit in an already warm room.

So I don’t really do a lot. I’ll play games, catch up on TV/movies, or read comics instead.

I did force myself to sit down and draw though, as it had been a month.

//

What I’m Drawing

Yeah yeah, another Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen, I know. This started out as just a sketching exercise for a warm up – no expectations, and then turned into a painting exercise. Overall I’m happy with it. Her head is a little too round, and I’m not satisfied with the hood shading, but it is what it is. Moving on.

I can always find something I don’t like about a finished drawing, and that’s motivation to start the next one, and do better. And I certainly like starting projects, just not necessarily finishing them. Always have at least 18 work-in-progress pieces I say, so I never get bored. 😉

//

What I’m Playing

Fall Guys, and quite a bit. The game recently went free to play and cross-platform, so it’s been my casual go-to when i have some free time. I’m usually good for a few rounds before I move on to something else, but that’s allowed me to rank up to level 40 so far this season, and win a few solo games.

Played and finished a smaller indie game as well, Sea of Solitude. Interesting platforming/exploration/puzzle game like Rime, but simpler. Its about depression and loneliness. Kinda dark, but artistic.

Played through Mortal Kombat 11 main campaign, still got the DLC expansion. Played through Sniper Elite 5 in coop.

Played through Dead Cells after they added the accessibly settings so I can play on easy mode to experience the game through, without struggling. I’m not really a fan of rogue-like games. I prefer to experience the game/story/whatever once through, and move on. So the whole gameplay loop of dying only to start over is tedious.

Also started playing through Hitman 2 – which is frustrating from an achievement competitionist perspective. Hitman 2 includes all of Hitman’s previous campaign levels AND all the achievements all over again. And I really don’t want to play through the game again just to unlock all the achievements. It would be nice if that save just transferred over, which apparently DOES work for Hitman 2 -> 3. But not Hitman 1. Oh well, gamer problems.

//

I really need to get back in to the routine of these, but might leave that till after summer vacation. So lets say… September we’ll be back on track. I’ll try my best to update as frequently as I’m able until then.

Until then. Be good. 🙂

WHAT i’M PLAYING

I’m overdue for an update. What have I been playing?

Shadow Complex
My last update consisted of a Review for Shadow Complex. I revisited this game after it was re-released on the Xbox One, re-mastered. You can check it out here.

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare
I finished the campaign for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. As I’m not an “online competitive gamer” I’m typically a year behind on Call of Duty games. The campaigns are usually solid, but since I’m not mad crazed over the online competition, picking the game up at full price is usually not worth it. And since I’ve been know to write reviews well after the game becomes irrelevant, there’s no incentive in picking up the game at release, when I have so much else to play. Expect a review soon.

Mad Max
Mad Max was a great game, so expect a review for it soon. It also has a photo editor, so I’ll be adding a gallery to the in-game photo section. I can’t speak highly enough about how fun this game was. It did have some drawbacks, mainly about the length of the game and size of the word, and boring busy-body side-missions, but nothing felt better than taking on a convoy, and ripping people out of their vehicles with the toe-cable.
Mad Max (4)

Lords of the Fallen:
As one of  March’s Xbox Free Games With Gold, I gave this a try. It’s sort of a poor-man’s Dark Souls. This should probably be under the “What I’m No Longer Playing” section, but I don’t have one of the those.

EA SPORTS Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR
I don’t know what it is about golf games, but they are addictive. I’ve completed the main tour, and I’m working on some of the side mini-games. Review soon – it’s not as bad as some have made it out to be, but it is definitely lacking in some areas. But the same complaint can be made towards every single EA “next-gen” launch/transition titles.

NEED FOR SPEED
A re-branding or re-imagining of sorts, EA has been a fun game to play over the past while. Pundits will complain about Live Action cutscenes, but these don’t deter from the final product. At launch the game was limited, but since then EA has updated the title with some fresh new vehicles and gameplay modes, as well as bolstering the online environment, allowing others to join in on the campaign races, as it is a populated world. So now that the game is considered complete, I’ll write a review for it.
Need for Speed™ (6)

Tom Clancy’s The Division
Holy cow have I been playing this game a lot and I’ve been having a lot of fun. It even inspired me to create a journal/diary to the game. You can check that out here. Only 5 entries as of this post, but I hope to continue it more as I progress through the campaign.
TOM CLANCY'S THE DIVISION (3)

DIRT Rally
I just picked this game up before the weekend, so I haven’t had the chance to fully dive into it yet, but expect some more info throughout the week, and in-game photos. So far its very good looking (not as great as I’d hoped) and its not easy to jump right into, and requires patience to master, which I appreciate.

Hitman
Deciding to release this game as Episodic was an interesting choice. Not sure if it’s because the game is incomplete or they’re wanting to spread out the title so that it’s not immediately forgotten after the launch window. It might be a smart choice. Either way it looks fantastic, with beautiful environments and lighting. And it actually allows the player to focus on each mission, playing it numerous different ways while we wait for the next episode.

Rocket League
A fun local and online soccer game with cars. I’ve been playing online with ILLESTRADER and I started up the season mode locally to try and knock off some achievements. Fun times had by all.

Well that’s no short list. Hopefully I’ll be able to knock some of this stuff off the list before month end.

In other news, E3 is around the corner in June and I am super stoked. Some of the developers have decided not to have their big conference at E3 and instead have decided to host it the day before – most notable EA. Last year Bethesda hosted theirs the day before and they’ll be doing so again, but this year EA is following suit and hosting their EA Play event. Either way I’ll be watching  and blogging. Its and exhausting 2 days of conferences, but I love it. Expect lots of news on June 12 and 13

Take care,

-iRogan

IDL FEATURE – PAX Prime Day 4: Forza 6, Tomb Raider, Hitman aaaaand They’re Gone :(

-Day four, the last day of another exhausting, but really fun year. Only myself and my girlfriend remains of the original four, so we started the day slow, packed up everything and checked out of the hotel.

DAY 4 – PAX Prime 2015: Going Home

-Upon exiting the monorail in the shopping centre, we had a quick lunch at the food court and made out way to the convention hall for the last time. Exiting from the shopping centre, we bumped into Gabe himself, Mike Krahulic, said hello, and kept walking. He seemed really busy.

-Today my intentions were to try a few more games, and leave early for the drive home. As it was a Monday, and not a long weekend, we were hoping the convention hall would be a little quieter. It was, but not by much.

-Rounding on the Square Enix booth, we watched a quick demo for the new Hitman. The game very similar to its predecessor, Absolution. Instinct mode returns, but the game looks very gorgeous, and the levels are huge. The game promises more open ended levels and more free-play, reminiscent of the earlier Hitman games, like Blood Money. Costumes still play a large role, as they allow us to enter into guarded areas.

-Onward and upwards, we checked out the Just Cause 3 area and watched the destruction challenge demo that they had on display. Wielding a rocket launcher, the point is to cause as much damage to the surrounding area in the time allotted. Game looks nice and plays pretty smooth from what I saw. The demo itself didn’t show any story missions though.

-Next stop in our brief day was the Microsoft Xbox quadrant. This portion had a lot of big games on display. I expect to already get most of them anyways, so this area wasn’t my initial priority this weekend, but with the convention closing today, I figured I should get some hands-on while the crowds were smaller.

-On display at the Xbox floor was Plants Vs Zombies – Garden Ware 2, Halo 5, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Rainbow Six Siege, Forza 6, and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

-I already have the beta access to Siege on Sept 24, so I just watched from the sidelines. The game was 5 v. 5 and have the groups go through the viewing and staging section, and then onto gameplay, playing 6 rounds. It seemed like it was only elimination and objective mode. No hostages.

-For the most part, the game looks and plays really good, however, it did seem to suffer from some lagging issues. I wasn’t sure if it was just this build, or the setup, but there was noticeable hiccups. Possible one of the reasons for the game’s delay. The games mention of the one bullet, one death is evident, as enemies will go down quickly. The level of destruction was less evident as previous demos seen last year. There are breachable walls, and you can drive around the camera bot. But I didn’t notice as much wall destruction or floor breaching from the matches I saw. Could just be a unique occurrence, but I’m sure I’ll have more opinions come Sept 24th and the beta.

-Mirror’s Edge Catalyst looks gorgeous and plays smooth. The demo was showcasing the parkour elements, and the game clearly looks like it’s on the latest Dice Engine. Very clean and colourful.

IMG_5086

-The Forza 6 demo had 6 playable races, but I was only interested in 2: Rain, and Night Time. The game feels and plays like Forza 5, so nothing new or surprising there. It boasts 60fps and 1080p which is to be expected, and 400+ vehicles. Sounds good. It doesn’t necessarily look any better than Forza 5, but they’re claiming a 70+ hour campaign. I don’t yet know what they mean by campaign, as Forza 5 was just a list of races to know off. Is there a story?

-Night time looks nice, but its unclear if there’s different levels of night yet. Midnight, Sunset, Dawn, dusk? or is it just straight black? Headlights looks nice, and having 24 vehicles on the tarmac adds a challenge.Cars feels a little more solid, and hopefully more of a detailed damage model.

-Rain looks great. The game already looks great as is, mimicking near real life quality, but the rain effects are pretty cool. Again, unknown if the rain is just the one setting, off and on, or is there gradual rain, downpour, wind, etc. Reflections look nice, and the puddles on the track are 3D rendered and will make your car slide realistically. Fun addition, but basically they act as an obstacle. Colin McRae’s Dirt 2 had puddles, if you’ll recall, Forza, 6 years ago. I think I failed to mention that in my review….

-Lastly, after my Forza fun, I waited to play Tomb Raider, The Rise Of. Before me was a Tomb Raider, player Tomb Raider. ZOMG!

IMG_5087

-The demo was from the story, and focuses on the exploration and platforming of a hidden, ruined temple. We start off in a vehicle with our driver, who we found has called in our location for a reward. The jeep gets taken out by helicopter gunfire, and we’re sliding down the cliff face to our doom, only to grab on with our rock climbing axe, which saves us.

-The feel of the character plays exactly like the original Tomb Raider reboot, but just a little more fluid and nuanced. Her next-gen hair returns, with all its physics. level design and detail is bolstered, and lighting and effects look good. Climbing, and breaking through walls feels familiar and intuitive, and the torch from the first game is replaced by a handy beautiful blue glow-stick, as Lara is expected to be a more established explorer this time around.

-The character animation has received another coat of mo-cap which is appreciated, and the game feels very cinematic, like its predecessor. Lots of in-game cutscenes break up the exploration and gameplay. It’s a nice touch and should be a blast to play when it’s fully released. I loved the first one.

-We ended the day on the 6th floor checking out the 2nd half of the exhibit on the floor (I did find the Rooster Teeth merch booth, but none of the prime significant members where there), the classic freeplay area, and when we were sitting down, resting our legs, caught some more cosplayers.

IMG_5090 IMG_5095IMG_5098IMG_5097IMG_5096IMG_5089

-Leaving around 3PM, headed back to the car, and drove the lengthy 4 hours home. Another successful PAX. Another great show.

-6pm – Press conference is live. Showing a sizzle reel for all the upcoming Sony games.

-Please welcome Shawn Layden. New reality of gaming is boundless. More than traditional gaming with the social connectivity. First game of the night, highly anticipated by the Sony community. Heroism and companionship, poetic story telling. Alluding to Uncharted? Nope, The Last Guardian. WTF!!?!?

The Last Guardian

-Trailer shows gameplay. The child and his beast. His giant, winged griffon thing. The child mimics jumping and the beast jumps across the valley, and waits. The player traverses down the ladder and makes the jump himself, but won’t make it, so his beast catches him on the other side. We command the beast via the child we play. Very much like ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. More like ICO with map platforming puzzles. Incredible level physics destruction. We need to make the run as the platform starts to come apart. The griffon misses the catch but uses its tail. Incredible emotional puzzles involving both the player and out beast, as we climb on its back and assist its climbing the ruins. The beast act and whines like a dog, has horns and feathers and little wings.

-Game looks gorgeous. Huge techno dinosaur-like creatures. Smaller techno deer-like creatures. Traditional bow and arrow, but with arrow mods. Awesome destruction elements. Game play shows the huntress taking on a large robotic dinosaur with the bow and arrow, one on one. One bow mod is a grappling tether that can attach to the ground. uncharted-4-a-thiefs-end

-Starts with a statue of Black Beard. Naughty Dog. Nate and Sully enter the shot, and open a large wooden door into a market. Gameplay shows lots of people milling about the market. Looks like the demo is having controller malfunction though. Nate’s not moving.

-Demo restarts with the Pirate statue. LOL. Woops. Visuals look amazing at least. Lots of interactions with the civilians.  Gun fire in our direction, and the real demo begins. Amazing physics, and level destruction. Great animations as expected. Gun play looks a little more consistent and refined. Still Triangle to pick up ammo. Witty dialogue still apparent between Sully and Nate. Great dialogue.

uncharted-4-nathan-drake

-Amazing level platforming and the ability to drive vehicles. Different paths can be taken to avoid enemy gunfire. Great level destruction while driving. Seems we can drive anywhere. Come across a construction site, and have to go off-road. Enemy truck drives through the wall. Camera zooms in on Nate and Sully to show highlighted points of interest.

-Driving sequence is amazingly detailed. Following a convoy now, off-road. Nate jumps up front and tell Sully to grab the wheel. We grapple on the truck and swing under the bridge and the truck attached to the convoy. Demo ends when we are about to crash into a wall.

*breath*

-Press conference over.
