Kojima, SEGA Giveaway, Bethesda + Fallout 4, and Dying Light – IDL NEWS

Eh Friday, the best day of the week.

Kojima Talks At DICE Summit

Some notable news came out of the DICE summit in Las Vegas this. Notably, from one Hideo Kojima. He discussed VR, working with Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus.

On VR

“VR came up over 20 years ago. What was described back then is finally coming to our everyday lives, so I’m very excited about it.”

“A few years ago, I tried the development kits, and I’m very susceptible to 3D motion sickness, so I couldn’t do it. And now the latest technology I’ve been trying, it doesn’t produce nearly as much motion sickness. I’m fine with it. A while ago, I was like, ‘there’s no way I can develop anything for this. I’m going to spend every day puking. That’s not worth it.’ But now, with the latest technology, I’m feeling maybe more confident to develop something.”

On Guillermo del Toro

Kojima reaffirmed his enthusiasm for working with del Toro, saying “of course” he’d love to work “on a game, a movie, I don’t care, we’ll do it.”

Guillermo del Toro said he’s done with game development “except with this man,” referring to Kojima. “I’ll do whatever the fuck he wants.”

“I feel extremely free right now,” Kojima said. “I’m trying to make a big, very edgy game with a small team…I have to do something that’s exactly what I want to do.”

On Norman Reedus

Kojima still hopes to collaborate with The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus.

“I’m a fan of Norman, and he’s an extremely nice guy. And last year he was worried, so I went up with him and told him, ‘everything is fine. I became independent. I’m doing my own thing now.’”

SEGA’s Game Giveaway

As part of SEGA’s Make War Not Love 3 event, they have a promotion going on where they’re asking gamers to play their games, and in doing so, will unlock free games every 48 hours. The first games made available were Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, and Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit series.

CbWj0hJUcAAEWuW

SEGA is now offering steam keys for Streets of Rage II, Binary Domain, and Condemned: Criminal Origins. These can be redeemed at the Make Love Not War website.

The next 3 games that’ll be released in a few days are: Gunstar Heroes, Renegade Ops, and Vikings: Battle for Asgard.

Bethesda Keeps Busy

At DICE Bethesda announced that they are currently working on 3 new long-term projects, that they will discuss more about at a future date.

“They’re different than anything we’ve done before, while also being a Bethesda-style game—kind of big and crazy—but in many ways different than things we’ve done before.”

Fallout 4 DLC Revealed and Raises Season Pass Price

fallout-4-rumors-elder-scroll-6

On the topic of Bethesda, Fallout 4 has had its first 3 add-ons announced: Automatron, Wasteland Workshop, and Far Harbor.

Automatron. “The mysterious Mechanist has unleashed a horde of evil robots into the Commonwealth, including the devious Robobrain,” reads the description. You will be hunting them down and creating your own robots, choosing from hundreds of mods. Automatron will be available in March for $10.

Wasteland Workshop will allow you to create and set traps for the inhabitants of the Wasteland, “from raiders to Deathclaws.” You can tame the creatures you capture, or even have them face off against each other. Wasteland Workshop is coming in April, and will cost $5.

Far Harbor is the largest of the three announcements, and will be coming out in May for $25. It features a new case from Valentine’s Detective Agency, and will have “the largest landmass for an add-on” Bethesda has ever created. There will be new quests, settlements, creatures, and dungeons, as well as brand new higher-level equipment.

Starting March 1st, the price of the Season pass will go from $30 to $50 of offset the costs of their ambitious DLC plans. Those that purchased the Season pass already will retain it at the original price.

Techland to Support Dying Light Until Year End

Techland has published a letter thanking fans for their support of Dying Light and Dying Light: Enhanced Edition, and has stated that they will support the survival game at least until the end of the year. They encourage fans to continue to send in their opinions regarding the game.

This is good news for me, as I will be picking up Dying Light: The Following – Enhanced Edition and playing that in co-op  hopefully later this spring, but I think The Division is on my immediate radar now.

///

On my end, I’ve been playing more Saint’s Raw IV and dipping my toes into The Division’s best this weekend. Also on the go is Assassin’s Creed Unity (expect more impressions next week) and Mad Max. I don’t know what I’ll be discussing for the Achievement of the Week this week yet, but I am keeping up with the Reviews, which I’m proud of. 🙂

Slow News is Not Always Bad News – IDL NEWS

XBLA Creator Thinks Microsoft Should Bring the XBOX Arcade Back

Creator of the Xbox Live Arcade, Greg Canessa believes that Microsoft should bring back the XBLA name and brand for the Xbox One. I think this is actually a good idea. I don’t think they should keep the same achievement rules or size restrictions of the games, but I do believe a separate hub for these type of games is warranted. The game store is overloaded with smaller or indie games, and they don’t belong in the same lists as the AAA titles. It would be easier to spotlight some of these if separated and they could bring back the Summer of Arcade.

Quantum Break

Coming off the news last week about the simul-release of Quantum Break on Xbox One and PC, and the cross-platform cross-buy, Microsoft has confirmed that the game will be a Windows Store exclusive on Windows 10, and won’t be available via Steam.

New Releases – Feb 16-17

Kinda a weak week on both news and new releases

Street Fight V (PS4)
I’ve never really been a fan of fighters, but the street fighter series has been huge. The art and design has always been very impressive, so I’ll probably do up some new SF throughout the week, to honour the release.

TRON RUN/r (PS4, Xbox One)
A new, fast, action adventure runner game in the world of TRON. We can use it to help absorb the shed tears surrounding the “no Tron 3” news.

Rocket League (Xbox One)
I am kinda excited about this game. looks fun. Fast team sports. Soccer, but with cars.

See, kinda slow day. Thursday I have a lengthy review for Metal Gear Solid, more news before the weekend, and then an art dump, plus Achievement of the Week, if I play any of the games listed above. I’m currently playing Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Mad Max, and just started up Assassin’s Creed: Unity. I’ll have my first impressions for Assassin’s Creed Unity up over the next few days.

Take care,

Destiny, Ubisoft, Call of Duty – IDL NEWS

Watch Dogs Sequel
Ubisoft
has confirmed that the follow-up to Watch Dogs will be released before the end of its 2016 fiscal year, so that’s anytime between now and April 2017.

ACSyndicateAssassin’s Creed
Following the news of the Watch Dogs sequel, Ubisoft has also confirmed that there will not be an Assassin’s Creed game this year as they will be re-examining the franchise. The decision is based on a slower launch for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.

“Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise. We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.”

Xbox One and Windows 10 Cross-Buy
Following the news of the Quantum Break Windows 10 PC release, which will launch simultaneously alongside the Xbox One version on April 5, players who pre-order the digital version of Quantum Break for Xbox One will get a free copy of the Windows 10 edition. The game supports saves across Xbox One and PC. This however is a limited promotional window.

The question was raised on whether this cross-buy promotion would be strictly for Microsoft releases in the future or include third-party games. Xbox Head Phil Spencer responded with:

We’ll make it a platform feature. We think it’s good for gamers.

Call of Duty Confirmed
Activision
has revealed that Call of Duty will return (was there doubt?) in 2016 and will be developed by Infinity Ward. Call of Duty, yet unnamed, is expected to be release around its normal November window, and is unclear if this will be a sequel to IW’s last COD game, Ghosts.

What About My Destiny
Following Activision’s Call of Duty News, they’ve also revealed more information on the future of Destiny. We will see a new expansion in 2016 and a proper sequel in 2017.

Destiny-The-Taken-King-Releae-Date-Details-and-Controversy

Activision Publishing, along with its partners at Bungie, expects to bring a large new expansion to Destiny in 2016 and to release a full game sequel in 2017,” the investor note reads.

With new found hours in the day, a lot can be accomplished. I’m somewhat back to a regular routine. I have found some more time in an already full day to dedicate to my craft, whether that be writing video game news or reviews, or drawing. But not sound like a broken record, no sir.

I’m trying my best to keep up with the news -trying for Tuesday and Friday, and a weekly review going out on Thursdays – I got the queue to sustain that for at least at least two months :p.

I’m also working on a weekly art dump for the weekends to complement my Achievement of the Week. I recently finished a big Titanfall piece and slowly working on Borderlands colour.

Yup, that’s my news.

2016 and all that jazz – IDL NEWS

Hello, once again, internet.

Rocket League’s Xbox Release
Rocket League will finally make its debut on the Xbox on Wednesday, February 17th. Bundled with the game will be the three previously-released content packs: Supersonic Fury, Revenge of the Battle-Cars, and Chaos Run. The Xbox One will also include two unique vehicles inspired by Halo’s Warthog ad Gears of War’s Armadillo.

Rocket League Hype Everywhere

Star Wars Battlefront Double XP Weekend
Star Wars Battlefront will host a double XP weekend February 12-14 after the SWB community successfully completed the recent Community Challenge.

I’ve found the game to be quite fun, and will try to log sometime this weekend to help rank up.

Tom Clancy’s The Division Umpteenth Beta
Ubisoft has announced another Division Beta, this most recent one running Feb 19-21st. I played the closed Alpha, and enjoyed what it had to offer, but NDA prevents me from discussing it further. And unfortunately I slept through the most recent closed beta, but I heard that it included the same missions and Dark Zone. I will try to take part during this new window to see where the game has improved, this close to release, and then share my opinions.

Titanfall Sequel Will Have Single Player Campaign/Multiplatform
The sequel to 2014’s Titanfall, expected to release late 2016/early 2017 is confirmed to have a single-player campaign and will no longer be exclusive to the Xbox One.

“One of the shortcomings of the first game was we just did not have the mechanism to tell everyone ‘here’s who you are, here’s where you are, and who’s around you,'” Stern said. “We knew all the answers; we just could not deliver it.”

I loved Titanfall, and still play it from time to time. I felt that its lack of solid single-player was its only lacking element. That being said, I wouldn’t have played the online component as much as I did, if it had.

New Releases – Feb 9

Assassins Creed Chronicles – Russia (Xbox One, PS4)
Wrapping up the trilogy, Russia has come out, just a few weeks after part two, India, came out. I played ACC China, and thought it was a unique 2.5D game, beautiful art and fun runner sequences. As I progressed through the game, it did become quite difficult in parts with a couple insta-fails parts. From what I’ve read India and Russia is very similar, but Russia has some unique sniper gameplay mechanics and a 2nd character, so I am looking forward to giving both of them a try. Here were my initial thoughts on China: ACC CHINA

Unravel (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
Unravel caught a lot of eyes at E32014 as this little indie darling being revealed by a very nervous dev showing off his baby for the first time, and not really know what to expect. The game has garnered quite the emotional response over the year that followed with fans sending in photos of their own little Yarny dolls. The game is finally out and I got to try the first two levels last week and found that the game was very pretty with some unique puzzle ideas. Excited to play through the full release.

Firewatch (PS4, PC)
Locked away as a PC and PS$ exclusive right now, Firewatch looks like a unique story driven game with brilliant voice acting. Not my typical genre but I’ll keep my ears peaked to news of any Xbox ports. One of the unique features of the PC version is you can order physical prints of the photos you take in-game.

Dying Light: The Following Enhanced Edition (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Dying Light’s big expansion is here – The Following – and alongside it, comes the full Enhanced Edition package. Myself and Illestrader will be picking this up as we’re in need of another lengthy co-op game.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (PS4)
Lovers makes its PS4 debut. Here’s my impression, for the Xbox: Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime

In somewhat of a gaming rut, trudging through some and hesitant to start others, I recently sat down and played through the Beyond Good and Evil HD re-release. This was in-part because I wanted something fresh, but also because I wanted to give the Xbox One Backwards Compatibility a try, as I hadn’t to date. I’m going to put up a review for it later this week.

I’m also still working on the website re-alignment to include art and other projects. It’s been slow as other priorities have shuffled my website obligations some.

WHAT i’M PLAYING – ARK: SURVIVAL EVOLVED

I picked up ARK this week during its Game Preview window. Right from the start it’s noticeable that this game is still incomplete. But I’ll get to that in a second.

I first jumped into the single player mode, not quite ready to tackle the PvP or PvE modes, regardless of the fact that these didn’t have any available slots.

2863393-ark17

Toiling with the rudimentary survivor creator, I quickly designed a guy that looks somewhat like me, generic, white; the options were minimal. I then proceeded to enter the game, landing on the beach of this alien world. I got the game not really knowing what it was, or what to expect. I was led to believe that it was a Minecraft clone, with dinosaurs. This is somewhat true.

The gameplay is a lot like Minecraft. You must forage for resources like stones or wood as these allow you to craft anything from tools to clothing to shelter. This portion started off pretty straightforward in my opinion. Punch a tree until it falls down to get the wood and thatch. Scavenge the nearby bushed for berries and fibre. Pick up some stones. Now make a pick axe or hatchet. The pick axe and hatched will yield different resources from trees, each of which are required to craft walls for a shelter.

On the combat side, you can build spears, and later on more advanced weapons. This is where the game started getting frustrating.

With ARK, there is a leveling component. Everything you do garners experience, even just surviving. And surviving is no easy feat, what with food and water being a strict constant requirement, and around every new stretch of beach another new type of dinosaur making sure it gets fed too. And your survivor is mighty tasty, I learned this early, and often.

The water requirement is easy enough, just jump into the water and watch out for piranhas and megladons, but food is another matter. Berries do not suffice, so hunting is mandatory. There’s more than enough pickings of the veggie eaters, but more often than naught, the big ones will turn around and fight back, and then there’s the meat-eaters always on the prowl.

Experience unlocks new crafting items to learn, and the game really opens up around level 10 when you can start crafting advanced weapons, and saddles for the dinos, and plots for planting crops. The survival aspect, found in the title, is apparent around every turn: fire requires fuel, any consumables expire in your inventory, and everything wants to eat you.

I almost felt comfortable after making a tiny shelter, setting up a fire pit and a few torches and watching the sun go down over the water, sitting on my little beach. I’d be content just living out the game not advancing beyond my safe little island. But then I look up and see this huge monstrous alien anomaly, curious as to what it is and why it’s there, watching. This is the story of the game, and what drives the player to explore beyond his comfort zone.

xpegywcsvzffxlrk6h4l

Graphically, the game is pretty enough; it is Unreal 4 after all. It takes a little while for the textures to pop upon initial loading, but the lighting is pretty. It still is a little buggy, and the object, foliage, and dinosaur draw distance is laughable. When playing in a private server, there is a minimum distance you must keep with the host, lest you be dragged against your will, but this might be a Game Preview restriction only. We found that when another player joins the game, if you spend more than a few seconds in the survivor creator, the game will boot you out and no new invites will yield results. The menu is clunky as well, and not nearly as refined as Minecraft.

Like I said, still a work in progress, but next year’s official release may prove to have many new features or advancements, and like Minecraft, will continue to have new features. That’s what I look forward to the most.
