Day 1 – A Diary Divided: The Division

What follows is a chronological order of events that take place in a series, written by an Agent within The Division who shall remain anonymous. He shares his nickname at the end of each entry, so that his friends and family will recognize, that they may keep up to date with his journey. The entries are date stamped the day they are received, which may not reflect the day they were written, as some entries may cover multiple days. They are posted as they come in, unaltered.

 DAY1

So I’ve survived day 1. I got the call that I had been dreading and now I’m here, for lack of a better word: alone. The message was received on my watch at oh-nine-hundred yesterday, March 19th, and I went straight to my local base to get on the next transport. I was expecting the message, but didn’t think it would come this soon, and with so little warning. Luckily I don’t have any pets, or a girlfriend or fiance at home. I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to my friends or Mom though. So, uh, goodbye everyone. I hope to see you again, or hear from you when this is all over. Mom, I love you and miss you, and I’m OK. I guess I should get that out of the way right away. I’m OK.

A little back story – I’m a Division Agent. Surprise! Right? Who would have guessed? One of many agents actually. We were enlisted, and trained in basic combat, and survival techniques. Nothing fancy. We know how to shoot, track, and survive. And basic comm skills. It’s not our day job, but something that we get some compensation on the side for, to keep up emergency supplies and rations, and so they can keep tabs on us. We’re a sleeper emergency response unit basically, to be called upon when shit gets real, when the government needs to regain control of its people. In the event of a disaster or something. We report to the Strategic Homeland Division and assist the JTL, or Joint Task Force to help restore some order to the city.

What I don’t need to tell you is that disaster has struck, in the form of a smallpox pandemic. Someone called it the “Dollar Flu” and the name has stuck. Its central to New York right now, and the city has been quarantined. With me inside. There aren’t many people left here either. Anyone left here standing is immune and the rest are, well, diseased. The disease transferred by touch through money, physical money. And in a heavily populated area like New York, money changes hands constantly. That’s why it spread so fast.

img_0241

I got one of the locals to snap a picture of me standing underneath a “No Standing Anytime” sign. The sign could be referring to me, or The X-Men. I didn’t ask for clarification.

They have the base of operations set up James A. Farley Post Office, and that was my first stop today. Met with the commanding officers and was given my gear, guns, some food while I’m mobile and my Comm pack. Met a few of the other Agents, but the expectations of us are to go somewhat alone, so that we’re more spread out across the city, and not clumped together. As a result of the Dollar Flu, and the city being quarantined, there is some pretty heavy looting and destruction of the city by the survivors. Basically thugs. The cockroaches are the ones to survive right? Our primary objective as an Agent is to clean up the city while the cause of the pandemic is determined, and a cure is created. As we are ground zero, we also have to follow the commands of the higher-ups, in case we’re give a mission.

Looting and destruction isn’t the worst of it. People have been taken hostage, people are fighting over whole streets, and claiming it as their own, like a gang mentality. No city services are running, so there’s fires everywhere. I’m surprised the power is even still running. There doesn’t really seem to be a lot of news leaving the area either. At the head base while I was waiting for my turn to be called for gear, I was watching the TV of the outside connection they had setup, and the news was talking about the virus and the quarantine, and that’s it. I’m guessing they don’t want people to know how bad it actually is, how bad the looting has gotten, or how high the death toll has risen. The JTL has no way of removing the dead bodies, and no real means of cleaning up the city. I’m not sure if they’re keeping them for testing, but there’s a lot of covered bodies around. I heard they have a huge incinerator near the construction site of the train tunnels.

I’m not allowed to talk to media or share anything. I have a little wireless chromebook that I keep with me, which is how I’m writing to you, but there’s no network or internet connections throughout the entire Downtown Manhattan. Only the Base has the hard-line connection and Satellite. Luckily the base is located in a Post Office though, and post offices deal in mail. I have a friend who works in Comms, and he has access to the Network and Comms to Brooklyn. I’ve given him the info to my work’s FTP. I work for a local free newspaper. They’ll get it, and hopefully post it somewhere. The plan is to drop off a USB drive with the entry into a secure mailbox, he uploads it, and puts the drive back. I have to check in at the HQ every morning and evening anyways for the daily rations, so this setup should work. Unless the Base gets attacked, or either of us get found ot, or I die. But lets not get ahead of ourselves.

I’m sharing this because I feel people need to know, and so my family knows I’m OK. This city is contaminated. We wear masks so that we don’t breath anything in. The streets are littered with abandoned cars. Its a mess. I’m staying in an apartment building a couple blocks away from the post office. Keeps me close,  but not too close. I also take a different route home everyday, just in case. The condo is nothing special – its already been looted and no one else was staying here. I sleep on the floor and don’t touch any of the furnishings without gloves, and it has power and heat most importantly, since its still late winter here. Hasn’t quite warmed up yet outside. It has running water too, which I’ll boil so I can bathe.

So that’s that. I made it through day one. It’s dark outside and I’m exhausted. They told me today was basically for orientation and to get situated, since I was one of the last transports in, but tomorrow … tomorrow is when the real deal begins. Oh-six-hundred – be ready. And I intend to be. Hopefully this message makes it out. It’ll be at least 12 hours old by the time anyone reads it I suspect. Hopefully another one will follow.

Kojima, SEGA Giveaway, Bethesda + Fallout 4, and Dying Light – IDL NEWS

Eh Friday, the best day of the week.

Kojima Talks At DICE Summit

Some notable news came out of the DICE summit in Las Vegas this. Notably, from one Hideo Kojima. He discussed VR, working with Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus.

On VR

“VR came up over 20 years ago. What was described back then is finally coming to our everyday lives, so I’m very excited about it.”

“A few years ago, I tried the development kits, and I’m very susceptible to 3D motion sickness, so I couldn’t do it. And now the latest technology I’ve been trying, it doesn’t produce nearly as much motion sickness. I’m fine with it. A while ago, I was like, ‘there’s no way I can develop anything for this. I’m going to spend every day puking. That’s not worth it.’ But now, with the latest technology, I’m feeling maybe more confident to develop something.”

On Guillermo del Toro

Kojima reaffirmed his enthusiasm for working with del Toro, saying “of course” he’d love to work “on a game, a movie, I don’t care, we’ll do it.”

Guillermo del Toro said he’s done with game development “except with this man,” referring to Kojima. “I’ll do whatever the fuck he wants.”

“I feel extremely free right now,” Kojima said. “I’m trying to make a big, very edgy game with a small team…I have to do something that’s exactly what I want to do.”

On Norman Reedus

Kojima still hopes to collaborate with The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus.

“I’m a fan of Norman, and he’s an extremely nice guy. And last year he was worried, so I went up with him and told him, ‘everything is fine. I became independent. I’m doing my own thing now.’”

SEGA’s Game Giveaway

As part of SEGA’s Make War Not Love 3 event, they have a promotion going on where they’re asking gamers to play their games, and in doing so, will unlock free games every 48 hours. The first games made available were Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, and Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit series.

CbWj0hJUcAAEWuW

SEGA is now offering steam keys for Streets of Rage II, Binary Domain, and Condemned: Criminal Origins. These can be redeemed at the Make Love Not War website.

The next 3 games that’ll be released in a few days are: Gunstar Heroes, Renegade Ops, and Vikings: Battle for Asgard.

Bethesda Keeps Busy

At DICE Bethesda announced that they are currently working on 3 new long-term projects, that they will discuss more about at a future date.

“They’re different than anything we’ve done before, while also being a Bethesda-style game—kind of big and crazy—but in many ways different than things we’ve done before.”

Fallout 4 DLC Revealed and Raises Season Pass Price

fallout-4-rumors-elder-scroll-6

On the topic of Bethesda, Fallout 4 has had its first 3 add-ons announced: Automatron, Wasteland Workshop, and Far Harbor.

Automatron. “The mysterious Mechanist has unleashed a horde of evil robots into the Commonwealth, including the devious Robobrain,” reads the description. You will be hunting them down and creating your own robots, choosing from hundreds of mods. Automatron will be available in March for $10.

Wasteland Workshop will allow you to create and set traps for the inhabitants of the Wasteland, “from raiders to Deathclaws.” You can tame the creatures you capture, or even have them face off against each other. Wasteland Workshop is coming in April, and will cost $5.

Far Harbor is the largest of the three announcements, and will be coming out in May for $25. It features a new case from Valentine’s Detective Agency, and will have “the largest landmass for an add-on” Bethesda has ever created. There will be new quests, settlements, creatures, and dungeons, as well as brand new higher-level equipment.

Starting March 1st, the price of the Season pass will go from $30 to $50 of offset the costs of their ambitious DLC plans. Those that purchased the Season pass already will retain it at the original price.

Techland to Support Dying Light Until Year End

Techland has published a letter thanking fans for their support of Dying Light and Dying Light: Enhanced Edition, and has stated that they will support the survival game at least until the end of the year. They encourage fans to continue to send in their opinions regarding the game.

This is good news for me, as I will be picking up Dying Light: The Following – Enhanced Edition and playing that in co-op  hopefully later this spring, but I think The Division is on my immediate radar now.

///

On my end, I’ve been playing more Saint’s Raw IV and dipping my toes into The Division’s best this weekend. Also on the go is Assassin’s Creed Unity (expect more impressions next week) and Mad Max. I don’t know what I’ll be discussing for the Achievement of the Week this week yet, but I am keeping up with the Reviews, which I’m proud of. 🙂

2016 and all that jazz – IDL NEWS

Hello, once again, internet.

Rocket League’s Xbox Release
Rocket League will finally make its debut on the Xbox on Wednesday, February 17th. Bundled with the game will be the three previously-released content packs: Supersonic Fury, Revenge of the Battle-Cars, and Chaos Run. The Xbox One will also include two unique vehicles inspired by Halo’s Warthog ad Gears of War’s Armadillo.

Rocket League Hype Everywhere

Star Wars Battlefront Double XP Weekend
Star Wars Battlefront will host a double XP weekend February 12-14 after the SWB community successfully completed the recent Community Challenge.

I’ve found the game to be quite fun, and will try to log sometime this weekend to help rank up.

Tom Clancy’s The Division Umpteenth Beta
Ubisoft has announced another Division Beta, this most recent one running Feb 19-21st. I played the closed Alpha, and enjoyed what it had to offer, but NDA prevents me from discussing it further. And unfortunately I slept through the most recent closed beta, but I heard that it included the same missions and Dark Zone. I will try to take part during this new window to see where the game has improved, this close to release, and then share my opinions.

Titanfall Sequel Will Have Single Player Campaign/Multiplatform
The sequel to 2014’s Titanfall, expected to release late 2016/early 2017 is confirmed to have a single-player campaign and will no longer be exclusive to the Xbox One.

“One of the shortcomings of the first game was we just did not have the mechanism to tell everyone ‘here’s who you are, here’s where you are, and who’s around you,'” Stern said. “We knew all the answers; we just could not deliver it.”

I loved Titanfall, and still play it from time to time. I felt that its lack of solid single-player was its only lacking element. That being said, I wouldn’t have played the online component as much as I did, if it had.

New Releases – Feb 9

Assassins Creed Chronicles – Russia (Xbox One, PS4)
Wrapping up the trilogy, Russia has come out, just a few weeks after part two, India, came out. I played ACC China, and thought it was a unique 2.5D game, beautiful art and fun runner sequences. As I progressed through the game, it did become quite difficult in parts with a couple insta-fails parts. From what I’ve read India and Russia is very similar, but Russia has some unique sniper gameplay mechanics and a 2nd character, so I am looking forward to giving both of them a try. Here were my initial thoughts on China: ACC CHINA

Unravel (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
Unravel caught a lot of eyes at E32014 as this little indie darling being revealed by a very nervous dev showing off his baby for the first time, and not really know what to expect. The game has garnered quite the emotional response over the year that followed with fans sending in photos of their own little Yarny dolls. The game is finally out and I got to try the first two levels last week and found that the game was very pretty with some unique puzzle ideas. Excited to play through the full release.

Firewatch (PS4, PC)
Locked away as a PC and PS$ exclusive right now, Firewatch looks like a unique story driven game with brilliant voice acting. Not my typical genre but I’ll keep my ears peaked to news of any Xbox ports. One of the unique features of the PC version is you can order physical prints of the photos you take in-game.

Dying Light: The Following Enhanced Edition (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Dying Light’s big expansion is here – The Following – and alongside it, comes the full Enhanced Edition package. Myself and Illestrader will be picking this up as we’re in need of another lengthy co-op game.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (PS4)
Lovers makes its PS4 debut. Here’s my impression, for the Xbox: Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime

///

In somewhat of a gaming rut, trudging through some and hesitant to start others, I recently sat down and played through the Beyond Good and Evil HD re-release. This was in-part because I wanted something fresh, but also because I wanted to give the Xbox One Backwards Compatibility a try, as I hadn’t to date. I’m going to put up a review for it later this week.

I’m also still working on the website re-alignment to include art and other projects. It’s been slow as other priorities have shuffled my website obligations some.

E32014 – Ubisoft Press Conference

3rd of the big 4 today, starting up. Ubisoft hosted by Aisha Tyler.

UbiPress

Far Cry 4’s first 5 minutes is on display. The game looks very similar to Far Cry 3, maybe just a next-gen boost, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s last gen and Next-gen. Assuming its going to be a very story driven FPS again. Game is based in the Himalayan mountains. Our character is on a bus with a passport, and we’re heading towards a militant checkpoint. Bus gets stopped, the papers our guide has gets rejected and all hell breaks loose. Our villain arrives via helicopter and grills the militant leader – ” I said stop the bus, not shoot the bus. Very big difference”. The villain has a similar psychotic entrance that Vaas had, he’s very calm and disturbing. Get the impression that the protagonist is related to the villain. Shout out to the villain w/ protagonist selfie. Nov 18th release.

Aisha Tyler is out, and the language censorship is turned off. Watch Dog’s success gets a brief mention, as does the fact that she’s in the game. Moving on to new stuff.

Just Dance 2015 – Yay dancing. #pee_break. This got a long presentation, 20+ people on the stage included.

The Division is up next with a long time lapse story trailer of the outbreak. Really shows the engine, day/night cycles, and city seasonal changes. Very awesome. Not an engine gameplay, as we already got that during the MS press conference.

Ubisoft’s next big project, once delayed – The Crew. Boasting gameplay that allows you drive across the entirety of the USA with no loading. We get a lengthy time lapse showcasing some cars and the different types of terrain to travel: deserts and snowy mountains, tarmac and off-road. Many different styles of cars, day/night cycles. The scope of this game is incredible, gigantic, and gorgeous. The time lapse showcases one of numerous 2+ hour missions. The game is to be released Nov 11th, 2014 on XBox1, PS4, and PC. Closed Beta available July 23rd, 2014.

Ubisoft’s biggest franchise, Assassin’s Creed is gonna be their big focus this year. the MS press conference had a brief showing on the multi-player side of Assassin’s Creed Unity, and at the Ubisoft side we get to see what single-player plays like, and how multi-player can be integrated. It seems like co-op can be drop in, as we pass some potential missions they advertise the option of “4 players”. We start of with the E3 staple – the story trailer set to lovely appropriate music. Unity focuses on the French Revolution. 4 assassins with the focus on co-operative gameplay. There are a ridiculous amount of NPC’s on the screen, hundreds, that you have to navigate through to reach your targets. Very simple, minimalistic HUD. Nothing static, just contextual. Eagle vision returns showing off the level’s focus, and enemies, and small context elements can pop up as requested so you know where to go. No maps on the HUD from what I can tell. New traversal elements, the ability to angle yourself up walls to grab ledges, instead of running straight at them. Similar combat mechanics, slow, paced. It does seem like the game is going back to the slower original assassin’s gameplay, scope the area, find info on the target, strike, or instigate a strike, and then run. To be release October 28th, 2014.

Time for a breather – another fitness game – Shape Up where your workout is a game, in a game, presented as a game. #gamer #focus

Time to pull on the heart strings, Ubisoft. Valiant Hearts – The Great War is next. Cartoon 2D side-scroller, made on the Rayman Legends engine, similar art style to Behemoth’s Castle Crashers. Focus is 4 players and a K-9 companion. The game is based on real WW1 history , 1914-1918, inspired by letters, taking place in a stylized universe. Bringing art and the past to life.

Nearing the end of the press conference now, as CEO and co-founder Yves Guillemot is out to say thanks….and here our next new game:

Rainbow Six: Siege!

We’re shown a pre-alpha multi-player match of a house breach. Starts of with the Six’s drone view inside of the house as the terrorists are barricading the walls and windows, and a one minute countdown for the match to start. Six’s decide to breach from the roof and upstairs windows. 5 vs. 5 gameplay – 5 minute breach. Match/breach starts, and the level of destruction to the house is incredible. No need top go through the doors when you can shoot your way through the walls. Crazy damage model being shown. The character’s models do have a cartoonier look, not unlike Team Fortress in a way. Matches finishes with a cliff hanger as 2 Sixs breach through a wall into the room while one breaches through the ceiling. Incredible showcase. Rainbow Six Siege.

Aisha Tyler and Ubi out!

Last up will be Sony’s Press Conference to wrap the day.
