IDL SHORT – Truth and Justice

The following is a short recap of the events that took place during the Truth and Justice campaign mission in Far Cry 4 – and how not to play the mission.

Truth and Justice

Today I killed Pagan Min, which was neither what I wanted to do, nor expected to do. I resent Pagan Min, don’t get me wrong; he has done many terrible things to the people of Kyrat, but I was not wholly ready for this task.

This very evening I had been summoned to a sizable village called Utkarsh to meet with some of the rebel leaders. I enter one of the larger houses and make my way towards the hidden stairwell, past a misaligned bookshelf. The family upstairs is a front, and the basement has a hidden staging area where some of the higher-ups are meeting. After the bookshelf has been secured and stairs hidden, I start downward to the sounds of voice chatter and know a meeting is already underway.

Mon_Apr_20_20-47-50_PDT_2015It wasn’t long after joining the meeting that I hear the screech of halting tires, followed by feet crunching through gravel and the front door of the house upstairs being kicked in.

The flamboyant and unmistakable Pagan Min brazenly enters, flanked by two soldiers and immediately starts questioning the scouts who live here. I hear the commotion, as do my comrades, and our dialogue stops. Creeping under the false floor, I lift a trap door to watch the confusion unfold.

Min’s discomposure is evident, roiling underneath his calm, perfectly groomed exterior as he compliments the family’s home, commenting on their hospitality. His words are muffled so I don’t pick up exactly what he’s saying, but clearly he is leading them to a false sense of security. In a flash of smug satisfaction he storms out, and his falseness is proved true by his twin guards and the muzzles of their assault rifles. In a burst of gunfire, our stand-ins are downed and the guards leave in a huff.

Disgust and anger flood over me as I witness this all-to-common Kyrat atrocity first hand, and vault up through the floor and out the door, scarcely looking at the fallen family. Min is already in his jeep driving down the nearby hill, but his guards are still patrolling. Or were, as I quickly gun them down in my haste to reach the edge of the slope to see where King Min is off to.

My fellow rebellioneers are yelling something at me as I spy the gyro-copter nearby. I don’t hear them though as I jump in the two-man vessel, and spin up the propeller blades; no one can stop me; I’m only seeing red. Exhaust chokes me as the engines come to life. The chopper lifts slightly off the ground, hovering as the blades reach optimal velocity, but I just sit there. How do I go up?

Wrestling the stick between my legs, encouraging altitude, the chopper tilts left and right as the jeep speeds away. “Go UP!” I urge. Spying what I think is the collective lever, I pitch the helicopter forward and up, and up, and up. Soon enough I’m enjoying the breeze of the open-style cockpit, and sit happily above the trees, briefly forgetting my mission.

Sun_Apr_19_18-31-15_PDT_2015This is as far as my little bird takes me though. As I reach an altitude of about twenty-five feet, I’m eloquently jettisoned from my seat, shortly followed by a plummet to the ground. The explosion of the gyro meeting a Fir rocks me back, and I clutch my face, shying from the heat wave. The world losses all colour for a moment as I catch my breath.

What happened? Did I forget how to descend and instead jump out? Did my little aircraft really just fail so dramatically? Is this mission over before it has begun?

The questions hit me, wave after wave, but the true purpose of my ill-attempted flight is still real. Pagan Min is very much getting away. Struggling to my feet and limping down the grassy hill, I clamber into a Tut Tut and drive off in the general direction of where Pagan Min was heading. I decide against following the road, and quickly find my piecemeal vehicle careening over ridges and down slopes, dodging trees left and right, straining to hold together. The Tut Tut’s exterior doesn’t add a lot of protection against the incoming branches that pelt my face or kicked-up dirt and dust that chokes me, but soon enough I find a dry path, and agree with the struggling vehicle – the smoother route down the mountain is safer.

I can hear Pagan’s rumbling jeep, so I know I’m at least traveling in the right direction. I’ll just keep an eye on the road and see if I can spot any tire tracks that would betray his path.

Mon_Apr_20_20-50-42_PDT_2015

As my narrowing route winds around mountainous cliffs and snakes downward along a river, I catch the tail end of Pagan’s dusty trail and slide around the next bend into an inviting village and awaiting soldiers. Min has stopped to bark off a few commands to his Lieutenants but doesn’t stay, instead opting to speed off. He wouldn’t have liked the scene that played out either way.

A handful of soldiers start a patrol and the rest setup a human barricade. Neither slow me as my three-wheeled Tut Tut barrels through the wall of flesh. The surprised group didn’t know how to react when they saw my little blue juggernaut skid into the town, and instead of yielding, saw fit to stand in the way like soccer players and get bounced off the hood. Leaving behind two piles of slightly bruised humans resenting the Tut Tut’s metal frame, I continue my chase after Min.

Mon_Apr_20_20-53-48_PDT_2015Coaxing all the speed from my little heap, I read the distance between myself and Min as narrowing – I am more maneuverable after all. One hand on the wheel, I bring out my automatic pistol and start firing at Pagan’s jeep, aiming for anything within range. Maybe he’ll scare and miss a turn, or maybe I’ll catch a tire and turn him over.

Neither happens as a rhino inappropriately interrupts our chase with his very large body and sharp horn, completely removing Pagan’s presence from the road, mangled jeep included. King Min’s body glides out through the windshield, into the air, hitting the ground in a tangled mess of limbs, and slides to a stop against a tree, face down.

My reaction is immediate, extreme, and entirely common in this predicament. “Holy Fuck!” I jerk the van’s steering wheel to the left to avoid the hazardous spike-adorned monster, incidentally turning the Tut Tut on its side.

Before the scene gets any more ugly, I scramble out with arms raised, and nod towards the rhino, signalling my thanks for his service. “I … I unfortunately cannot repay you,” I stutter. Testing the newly forged but fragile peace treaty, I walk around the rhino towards Pagan Min’s lifeless body to see the damage.

The pink and purple clothes, and blond hair – Pagan Min is a sore sight – but the blood, dirt and grass that now make up his face is unbearable. Pagan Min is dead, and Kyrat is better for it. Long Live the King.

I bring up my radio to call my colleagues, but instead receive a call from none other than Pagan Min. “Hello! Did you miss me? Oh wait, I guess you did. Ha! … And you ruined a perfectly good body double I might add. An expensive one at that.”

Pagan Min lives? How can this be. I had come so close to finishing this tale, freeing the people of Kyrat from their torment. Now what will I do, how will I ever get this close to Pagan Min again.

Pagan is still chirping away as I focus again on the radio and interrupt his monologue. “Next time Min, it’ll just be you and me!” I promise him, and clip the radio back on my belt.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you. What did you say?” He replies, goading a response. I am, however, done talking. After a brief silence he finally grows bored, ” … Strong silent type. I like it.” He hangs up.

I bring out my map and stare blankly.

Now I’m lost…

WHAT i’M PLAYING / iREVIEW – Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – The Problem Is Not The Problem

Not sure if the end of the world was a lie, or if Desmond Miles saved us?

Title: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Platform: Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PC, Wii U
Publisher: Ubisoft
Reviewed on: Xbox One

The Assassin’s Creed stories, like those in most open world games, can be hard to follow sometimes. The worlds are so open, with an impossible list of activities to do, it’s hard to just focus on the story campaign alone. One would start to feel guilty about passing over all the side activities calling out for attention.

Over this past weekend I played Assassin’s Creed IV: Blag Flag through to its story conclusion. This was a game that I started back in February on the Xbox One and have been plugging away at for a few days here and there, but never really making much progress.

I had managed a mediocre 10 – 15 or so hours in February and March, but then let it start to gather dust. But it remained there, in my library, proudly sitting at the beginning of the alphabetical list; constantly hollering.

assassinscreed41

Full disclosure: I have a short attention span when it comes to open world games of the Ubisoft ilk. The opening quarter of the game plays like a tutorial mission, introducing us to the many different mechanics newly introduced. The player is only granted his ship – the ability to venture out on your own, to fly the coop – a couple hours in.

“OUT OF RUM. WHY? WHY ARE WE OUT OF RUM?”

Saturday and Sunday, I resigned myself to completing the main portion of the game and completing most of the achievable achievements. Those I could see myself completing in the 2 sittings. I unknowingly, but not surprisingly played 12 hours a day for the two full days to wrap it up. The only true evidence of this is when Sunday evening rolled around, reminding me I had to work the next morning. I did complete the story however, some of the attainable achievements, and conquered the forts.

And in just over 35 hours, which, in a game such as this, is really no time at all, and I’m aware of this. The game informs me I’m only 52% done. But no, GAME, I’m 100% done. I’m moving on. I have other Ubisoft games to tackle. Other Assassin’s Creed games even.

I didn’t beat the game because I wanted to. I beat it because it had taken up far too much valuable real estate on my harddrive, and I’d grown exhausted of its mocking glare over the past 6 months.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag features our new hero in the game world: Edward Kenway – a privateer turned pirate turned Assassin. In the real world we play an unnamed engineer, working for Abstergo Entertainment. After the death of Desmond Miles in Assassins Creed III, we have found that Abstergo is still able to explore his genetic memories from samples of his body, and seeking profit, Abstergo has started turning these memories into simulated reality adventures for the general public’s consumption.

Back to Kenway, we get to sail the wide open seas in the Carribean, and take part in land-based adventures in Cuba and Jamaica, and the Caribbean islands. We visit many familiar locales – popularized by pirate movies and TV shows – like Nassau, Kingston and Tortuga. And we get introduced to familiar characters such as Edward “Blackbeard” Thatch, and Charles Vane.

assassinscreed42The game takes the mobility of Assassin’s Creed III and makes it smoother and quicker, and in taking the tacked on ship battles, graciously makes this the primary focus, upsetting no one. Ever.

The commandeering of the Jackdaw is the best part of the game. Ship to ship battles are simultaneously frantic and glorious, and when a ship is defeated, you can pull alongside, and board it. In defeating all the remaining enemies, the player can choose to add the ship to your fleet for the trading mini game, or scuttle it. The trading mini game adds to your bank account for ship and character upgrades. This was introduced in III, and is easily overlooked, but it’s a thing.

“BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES, WEIGH ANCHOR! WE SAIL . . . WITH THE TIDE”

As the story progresses, and as our own ship gets upgraded, the battles become larger and increasingly difficult as we start to war against larger ships in increasing numbers. These battles can, at times, require full attention and strategy.

The open world takes place in both the seas and towns, and everything is seamless, without loading. At any time, within range of a small island, we can anchor the Jackdaw and dive our Assassin overboard, to swim ashore and search for treasure. It is that fluid, and a lot of fun. The game also has a full day and night system and full, fully realized weather systems. Windy channels and huge storms can come rolling along with the occasional rogue wave or water tornado. Both of these scary happenstance events are to be wary of.

The game features quite a few large cities, Kingston and Nassau, and Havana, and plenty of smaller towns. As well as full jungle islands. The game brings back hunting of animals, and includes the much criticized whale hunting.

assassinscreed4

The fortress battles are the best showcase of the game’s ship to shore fighting mechanics. The strongholds act of the synchronization points for the world map, like towers in Far Cry 3 and 4; once completed they reveal the map, side quests and collectibles in that quadrant.

We storm the garrison from the sea, taking down its defenses with our ship’s many guns. Once thoroughly defeated, we land the ship, attacking on foot, needing to track down and kill the commander of the fort, completing the attack.

“STOP BLOWING HOLES IN MY SHIP!”

Kenway’s arsenal is as burgeoning as ever. Dual wielding swords, dual knives, smoke bombs, sleep darts, rope darts, and 4 pistols for multi-shooting. We are the true bringer of death. At times, when surrounded by 8 or so enemies, and utilized everything on our utility belt, we’d be an even match for The Dark Knight.

As I said at the top, the story can sometimes get muddled as we partake in side assassination missions, or naval battles, distracting by fragment collecting or searching for buried treasure . . . so it can be hard to keep track of what is happening in Kenway’s campaign. It’s really the only downside to open world games such as these, and the story suffers from lack of continuity.

In the finale, in typical fashion, the game wraps up all the events and it plays very linear. Cut scene to cut scene, assignation then another cut scene. The last 3 chapters remove the open world aspect from the game, forcing the player to wrap up their experience. But after all said and done, the open seas are ours again, as well as the Abstergo development floor, for those who cared.

Assassin’s Creed IV brings all the very best of its predecessors together and melds them with an altogether new tale, while continuing along the same story thread that the past 5 games have written. Released in 2013 as the console next-gen bridge, it is the best Assassin’s Creed game to date. Now it is time for me to move onto last year’s Unity and this year’s Syndicate, and BEYOND.

For those who like: sailing the open seas, playing the pirate, bar fights and killing people with your awesome.”

Achievements mainly reside in the story chapters and unfortunately some in multiplayer. The rest are mainly collectibles: complete the forts, complete the hidden shipwrecks, full upgrade everything – lame.

Notable Achievements:
Wild West Indies (kill 4 enemies in a row using multi-pistols) – 20G
Hungover (wake up in a haystack) – 10G

IDL NEWS – No New Games, New News, and How Time Flies

Where does the time go? All of a sudden it’s What i’M Playing Wednesday, then it’s the weekend, then I play Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag for 24 hours over the weekend, then it’s Tuesday? Where is my mind?

So it’s Tuesday and there’s not really any new games to report on, so that’s lame. But there’s lots of news to discuss. Starting off with sad news. 😥

Sometimes it’s sad sometimes it’s for the best. Ubisoft has announced that Rainbow Six Siege has been delayed from October 13th until Dec 1st for all regions to improve the co-op experience across all game modes and other improvements and adjustments.

Halo 5’s lack of split-screen

Halo_GuardiansHalo 5: Guardians developer 343 Industries has responded to the outcry from fans in response to the news that its upcoming Xbox One-exclusive shooter won’t feature split-screen support.

343i franchise development director Frank O’Connor explained that adding in the feature simply isn’t possible. “If we could do it, we would do it. But it is what they call ‘nontrivial,'” he said.

So tomorrow I have another What I’m Playing Wednesday, as I’ll go into further details about my 24 hour Assassin’s Creed IV bleeding-eyes marathon, and what I’ll be playing next.

I’ll be writing more of a proper review for the title as well, about its good’s and bad’s and why it takes me 6 months to beat a Ubisoft open-world game, where I usually resort to a complete shut-in weekend to get it out of the way. Actually tomorrow’s column might just be a What I’m Playing/iReview.

I also really didn’t get up to doing anything last week in the way of a review or achievements. I hope to change that this week. They’re my favourite parts after all.

Makes sense to me.

WHAT i’M PLAYING – LEGO Batman, Shiftlings, The Crew + News

So, What I’M Playing is back to Wednesdays? Ok? Has a better ring to it.

So, since I have come back from my two week hiatus, (if you can call it as such since the reviews didn’t stop) I have picked up LEGO Batman 3, and Shiftlings. Batman was on sale during the BIG summer Xbox sale, so it was hard to turn that sale down.

LEGO Batman 3
Lego Batman 3 has been pretty fun thus far. TTGames has perfected the formula, and have just been applying it to new franchises. The game itself is a lot more fun in co-op, obviously, so I’m sure I’ll be playing it often enough with ILLESTRADER. That being said, the game seems to have decreased the difficulty curve, and have become extra bloated with characters.

image (1)

In prior LEGO Batman games, a lot of the puzzles required different suits. And that is still retained, but what I have noticed this time around, is that when you approach the puzzle, or the interactive area, the character will automatically change into the suit required. That, and for pacing purposes, the rooms and puzzles are extra bloated this time around, extending the duration of the level. Checkpoints aside, you still need to beat the level before you can save and exit. I haven’t noticed any save spots like in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes.

Shiftlings
I also gave Shiftlings a try, in couch co-op, again with ILLESTRADER. The premise is like that of a game show. The goal is for the two joined space dudes to traverse the level to get to the door activation switch, and then on to the exit. The game is a fun platformer and the levels are small enough that you can zoom out the camera to see it in its entirety, to plan the trip.

shiftlings

The mechanic for this game though, is one of the space dudes has farted within the suit making it balloon shape in size, so one of the players at any given time is not able to jump high or fit through small areas, however you can transfer the air to the other players suit whenever, and the pair are attached by a semi-long breathing tube.

Its a fun little physics platformer, and super frustrating at times playing with a co-op couch partner. I’ll have more info about the game on Sunday as I’ll be dedicating my Achievement of the Week to it, and expect a review sometime later.

Xbox’s First Party Strategy
At Gamescom 2015, Xbox head Phil Spencer spoke about first-party exclusives, and his vision going forward.

“My strategy is more around our own first-party franchises, and investing in franchises that we own and probably fewer deals for exclusive third-party content,” said Spencer. “I want to have strong third party relations, but paying for many third-party exclusives isn’t our long term strategy.”

Gears of War Ultimate Edition and Backwards Compatibility
Microsoft
and The Coalition have announced that Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War: Judgment will be backward compatible on Xbox One this fall.

e9513375-39fc-4800-9eab-e49ec7f45e2c

In addition to that, it was revealed that anyone who plays online in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition between launch on August 25 and the end of 2015 will gain access to every backward-compatible Gears game for free.

Doesn’t help me none since I own them all.

Destiny Sans Peter Dinklage
Bungie
has revealed it has recast the role of Ghost in Destiny. Citing availability as one of the main reasons. Ghost will be reappearing in the next expansion The Taken King, and will feature Nolan North as the voice talent. All the original lines have been re-recorded as well.

Destiny’s Leveling System
More Destiny news as Bungie has announced that in the next expansion, they will be removing the Light system for leveling up. Players can level from 1-40 by completing missions, killing enemies and completing bounties.

“The conflation of gear and character level led to this place where your identity was determined by things outside of your control,” creative director Luke Smith said. “We don’t want to do that.”

Star Wars Battlefront’s Fighter Squadron and Mode
star-wars-battlefront-offers-first-look-at-fighter-squadron-mode-488398-2EA and DICE have announced Fighter Squadron, a new aerial vehicle-only multiplayer mode for Star Wars Battlefront.

The premise of Fighter Squadron sees the Rebel Alliance hunting down an escaping Imperial transport shuttle, which the Empire team must protect. Each ship has its own abilities, giving the A-Wing and its homing-missiles a different role than the X-Wing, for example.

Tomorrow I’ll catch up with more news, and hopefully prepare a review before the week is over, and then Sunday is an Achievement Update.
