In my ever expanding quest to find new things to write about, I’ve decided to dedicate some time towards a dedicated preview of an upcoming game that catches my fancy.
Weekly I discuss the news when there is some (mostly always), the new releases, a discussion on what I’m currently playing, usually a review, and my achievement of the week. The news usually catches any big updates on a game before its release – but nothing truly fleshed out – and my What i’M Playing feature and iReview catch it afterwards, but I think I’m going to try and dedicate a post to previewing a game, an in-depth preview.; discuss its announcement trailer, gameplay, release, etc. This may not be weekly, but maybe as often as news and games permit. And it’ll really only be for notable games I might find interesting.
This format allows me to slide it under the Features section as well, and allows me to revisit and update the post, if new info comes to light.
I’m basically just broadening my scope, dedicating more time to writing, as the regular news is just relaying the same info you can find anywhere else.
Unique content FTW! Without further ado . . .
Lawbreaker is an upcoming video game developed by Boss Key Productions and published by Nexon. The game will be a free-to-play sci-fi arena shooter. Created by Cliff Bleszinski, formerly of EPIC and Gears of War fame, the game was originally codenamed Project BlueStreak. Expected release date is in 2016.
Boss Key Productions was founded by Bleszinski after he came out of retirement – retirement due feelings of gaming fatigue with gamers, developers and publishers alike.
///
The story goes that due to testing on the moon’s surfaced caused it to be split, and in turn, caused massive damage to Earth due to its gravitational forces, leaving seas churning and the Earth cracking. The effects were so severe that Earth’s gravity never went back to normal. But eventually life went on, and civilization was rebuilt.
After a time of peace, human nature started to return, and the strong started to pick on the weak as they tend to do. The year is 2105 and gangs have started utilizing gravity manipulation to become super strong. The gangs unified across the globe and became knows as the Breakers. Consecutively, Law Enforcement joined forces to fight the threat.
///
The game is using the Unreal Engine, as Bleszinski is want to do. And he’s gone back to what he’s done best, arena shooters. The level design is unique, due to the gravity theme, as there’s floating islands and rock formations. Verticality and mobility will obviously play a large role in this game and will feature jet packs, gravity fields and grappling hooks. The three pillars are: guns, gangs, and gravity.
The gameplay trailer features some of the different playable characters. First up:
Kitsune – Assassin/ Gang. She runs around wielding two swords, grappling hook, and energy gun.
Breacher – Gunner/ Law. Breacher features an energy gun, shoulder gun, boost pack, and the trailer shows the ability for him to shoot backwards blindly, over his shoulder, and pistol.
Maverick – Skirmisher/ Gang. This character has a jet pack and almost wings, so he looks more aerial. Hes got a beam chaingun type weapon and throws grenades.
Cronos – Titan/Gang. This is the heavy. He’s a big character with powerful melee and ground smash, Equipped with a rocket launcher, and has the ability to rocket jump.

Unknown yet is when the true release window is, and if this will be PC exclusive. Stick around for more info.

-Day four, the last day of another exhausting, but really fun year. Only myself and my girlfriend remains of the original four, so we started the day slow, packed up everything and checked out of the hotel.
-Upon exiting the monorail in the shopping centre, we had a quick lunch at the food court and made out way to the convention hall for the last time. Exiting from the shopping centre, we bumped into Gabe himself, Mike Krahulic, said hello, and kept walking. He seemed really busy.
-Today my intentions were to try a few more games, and leave early for the drive home. As it was a Monday, and not a long weekend, we were hoping the convention hall would be a little quieter. It was, but not by much.
-Rounding on the Square Enix booth, we watched a quick demo for the new Hitman. The game very similar to its predecessor, Absolution. Instinct mode returns, but the game looks very gorgeous, and the levels are huge. The game promises more open ended levels and more free-play, reminiscent of the earlier Hitman games, like Blood Money. Costumes still play a large role, as they allow us to enter into guarded areas.
-Onward and upwards, we checked out the Just Cause 3 area and watched the destruction challenge demo that they had on display. Wielding a rocket launcher, the point is to cause as much damage to the surrounding area in the time allotted. Game looks nice and plays pretty smooth from what I saw. The demo itself didn’t show any story missions though.
-Next stop in our brief day was the Microsoft Xbox quadrant. This portion had a lot of big games on display. I expect to already get most of them anyways, so this area wasn’t my initial priority this weekend, but with the convention closing today, I figured I should get some hands-on while the crowds were smaller.
-On display at the Xbox floor was Plants Vs Zombies – Garden Ware 2, Halo 5, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Rainbow Six Siege, Forza 6, and Rise of the Tomb Raider.
-I already have the beta access to Siege on Sept 24, so I just watched from the sidelines. The game was 5 v. 5 and have the groups go through the viewing and staging section, and then onto gameplay, playing 6 rounds. It seemed like it was only elimination and objective mode. No hostages.
-For the most part, the game looks and plays really good, however, it did seem to suffer from some lagging issues. I wasn’t sure if it was just this build, or the setup, but there was noticeable hiccups. Possible one of the reasons for the game’s delay. The games mention of the one bullet, one death is evident, as enemies will go down quickly. The level of destruction was less evident as previous demos seen last year. There are breachable walls, and you can drive around the camera bot. But I didn’t notice as much wall destruction or floor breaching from the matches I saw. Could just be a unique occurrence, but I’m sure I’ll have more opinions come Sept 24th and the beta.
-Mirror’s Edge Catalyst looks gorgeous and plays smooth. The demo was showcasing the parkour elements, and the game clearly looks like it’s on the latest Dice Engine. Very clean and colourful.
-The Forza 6 demo had 6 playable races, but I was only interested in 2: Rain, and Night Time. The game feels and plays like Forza 5, so nothing new or surprising there. It boasts 60fps and 1080p which is to be expected, and 400+ vehicles. Sounds good. It doesn’t necessarily look any better than Forza 5, but they’re claiming a 70+ hour campaign. I don’t yet know what they mean by campaign, as Forza 5 was just a list of races to know off. Is there a story?
-Night time looks nice, but its unclear if there’s different levels of night yet. Midnight, Sunset, Dawn, dusk? or is it just straight black? Headlights looks nice, and having 24 vehicles on the tarmac adds a challenge.Cars feels a little more solid, and hopefully more of a detailed damage model.
-Rain looks great. The game already looks great as is, mimicking near real life quality, but the rain effects are pretty cool. Again, unknown if the rain is just the one setting, off and on, or is there gradual rain, downpour, wind, etc. Reflections look nice, and the puddles on the track are 3D rendered and will make your car slide realistically. Fun addition, but basically they act as an obstacle. Colin McRae’s Dirt 2 had puddles, if you’ll recall, Forza, 6 years ago. I think I failed to mention that in my review….
-Lastly, after my Forza fun, I waited to play Tomb Raider, The Rise Of. Before me was a Tomb Raider, player Tomb Raider. ZOMG!
-The demo was from the story, and focuses on the exploration and platforming of a hidden, ruined temple. We start off in a vehicle with our driver, who we found has called in our location for a reward. The jeep gets taken out by helicopter gunfire, and we’re sliding down the cliff face to our doom, only to grab on with our rock climbing axe, which saves us.
-The feel of the character plays exactly like the original Tomb Raider reboot, but just a little more fluid and nuanced. Her next-gen hair returns, with all its physics. level design and detail is bolstered, and lighting and effects look good. Climbing, and breaking through walls feels familiar and intuitive, and the torch from the first game is replaced by a handy beautiful blue glow-stick, as Lara is expected to be a more established explorer this time around.
-The character animation has received another coat of mo-cap which is appreciated, and the game feels very cinematic, like its predecessor. Lots of in-game cutscenes break up the exploration and gameplay. It’s a nice touch and should be a blast to play when it’s fully released. I loved the first one.
-We ended the day on the 6th floor checking out the 2nd half of the exhibit on the floor (I did find the Rooster Teeth merch booth, but none of the prime significant members where there), the classic freeplay area, and when we were sitting down, resting our legs, caught some more cosplayers.
-Leaving around 3PM, headed back to the car, and drove the lengthy 4 hours home. Another successful PAX. Another great show.

-Day Three is here, the last full day of PAX before everyone heads home. Today was another solid day of cosplay and panels.
-Today the plan was to attend a few more panels, explore the rest of the exhibition halls, and play some games. Breaking our fast early we head off in different directions. 2 of the group wanted to check out the Dark Souls III line, myself and the lady willing to hit the 6th floor to see the smaller devs, and stores. I still haven’t located the RTX merch booth though. Strange, they may not be here.
-The plan was to meet up at the Benaroya Hall for the Gabe and Tycho Q&A #2, around noon for the 12:30 panel. The panel was presented in FULL DOLBY ATMOS, and started off with the Star Wars Battlefront Hoth demo trailer in full volume. It was quite the visual and audible spectacle. Gabe and Tycho took the stage in epic fashion, and proceeded to answer prepared questions for a prompt hour, bowing and leaving.
-We then headed off for a bite of lunch on our way back to the main building. We split up again, as the other group wanted some Dark Souls III hands-on and the leftovers left to wonder the halls to see what else was exciting.
-We stopped by the Twitch booth for a bit and laughed as a few contestants failed at QWOP, and then sat for a bit in the Xbox lineup featuring Mad Max.
-Mad Max is a fun game. It looks gorgeous. An open world game set in the desert wasteland. Not tied to the movie, we play Max, just trying to survive. The world is littered with strongholds, and enemy convoys. The game heavily features driving, vehicular combat, and hand-to-hand combat. The demo crew presented us with two options: take down a stronghold, or take down a convoy. I chose the stronghold.
-Starting up the game, we’re dropped into our vehicle and asked to reach an elevated look-out point. Right away in the vehicle, the game plays nice, but the controls seem a little counter-intuitive, so it may take some getting used to. The vehicle feels a little sluggish and floaty when trying to attempt precision moves, but we also have our very own War Boy in the back to man the grappling hook. The tow cable allows us to bring down sniper towers, or pull down walls. A neat mechanics and fun. It is Left Bumper to aim and this slows the world down, and B to shoot. Right Trigger is used for acceleration in a vehicle or running on foot. On foot, B to shoot feels weird as LT to aim and RT to shoot is so ingrained, but the controls are consistent throughout, so once I’m used to it, it’ll be fine.
-After fending off some enemy vehicles, we reach the bridge and scope out the stronghold with our binoculars. Back in the car, we race towards the sniper tower, attaching our tow cable and tearing it down. It feels nice when the line goes taught as it feels like we actually hooked something with weight, and can watch the car struggle to pull it over.
-Driving through a couple smaller turret towers and we’ve reached the front gates. Lined with guys, there’s a couple different routes we can take, but I spot two propane canisters and rip them off the wall with the car’s tow cable, and the wall is free of enemies. Next step is the wall itself, and then I’m on foot, vaulting over a barricade and run face to face with a large group of weapon wielding enemies waiting inside.

-Mad Max’s fist to fist combat feels reminiscent of the Arkham games. X to punch a bunch, Y to deflect or block when indicated, and occasionally a finisher move will present itself. It works the same with a melee weapon in your handf, or you could clear house with the shotgun which felt powerful. The grenade-tipped spears are handy, and can be thrown at groups of enemies or into barrels for huge explosions. This is how we take down the strong hold in the end, and walk away, never looking back.
-This build felt really solid, only lacking some polish and refinement. This was a stand-alone demo, so it’s hard to say how close this was built to the final gold game, as it launches this Tuesday. Fun nonetheless, just was not given any indication of story, or length of the game.
-Everyone met up again at the Skybridge at 4PM, and we closed the afternoon off fairly early, as 2 of the group were leaving tonight. We saw some more cosplayers on the way out, and upon leaving the convention hall, spotted the whole fleet of Mad Max UBER vehicles, with the warriors standing on top for photo ops. WITNESS ME!!!
-Back at the hotel we chilled for a bit to rest our weary legs, and played some Xbox games to relax. The 2 leaving said their goodbyes, and myself and the girlfriend left again for the evening to get some dinner and watch the Late Night Dub Fights. Dinner at the Sport Pub and then a quick walk to the Monorail and on to the convention hall, arriving breathless with barely enough time. We were 2 of the last 10 to enter the hall, and sat at the back.
-The Lat Night Dub Fights is a group of panelist voice dubbing over terrible old cartoons, commercials, and TV show clips. Totally improve, the evening is filled with laughs and a few embarrassing groans. Wrapping up right before 11PM, we jog back to the Monorail to catch the last train, and close out the evening.
-Last day is tomorrow, day 4, and then sad goodbyes to PAX 2015. I’m looking forward to a relaxing drive back home, assuming the wind hasn’t impacted our route.

-Day 2 started a little earlier than Friday, but the convention was that much more packed as we have reached the weekend. Today I saw many Harley Quinn cosplays, and a few of the IGN staff. Good, productive day.
-Today it was decided that we would get some more hands-on with some games. On the walk to the Convention Centre we walked among the many headed in the same direction and entered among the throng, heading straight to the fourth floor.
-Today we were 4, as a new addition entered into Seattle the night before, so the first step was another tour of the exhibition halls. First IGN celebrity viewing was none other than Naomi Kyle, Daily Fix host.
-Next up we walked through the Mega Indie Booth and watched some 4-player Gang Beast fights. A physics brawler, where 4 beasts square off melee, sumo, wrestling style. The point is to punch and slam each other and then pick up your opponent, Royal Rumble style, tossing them out of the arena. Looks fun.
-We also caught a bit of the game Drawn to Death. a shooter, where everything is drawn in pen like it was on scrap lined paper at the back of class.
-Next up we walked through the Microsoft/Xbox territory. Caught a glimpse of some Halo 5, Forza Motorsport 6, and Rise of the Tomb Raider. I may try for some hands-on tomorrow or Monday. Halo 5 looks good, as expected, and Forza 6 looks nice with the water effects.
-After Xbox we went to check out the Square Enix booth. Square had a big showing this year with Hitman, Deus Ex, Final Fantasy XV, DragonQuest, and Lara Croft GO on display, among others. I got some hands-on with Lara Croft GO on the iPad and it was a lot of fun. A strategic platformer similar to Hitman GO. You can move one space per turn, and you follow along a track that can branch off, and everything else in the level moves in the same turn as you.
–
The levels I played took place in the jungle, and involved cliff walls, saw blades and snakes. Swiping the direction of choice, Lara moves and all the traps follow suit, so occasionally, for timing and placement reasons, backtracking is necessary to advance. The game looks nice, and plays smoothly.
-I bought both Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO tonight and will give them both a play-through. For some reason I always thought they were iDevice only.
-I saw some gameplay of the Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae demo, and it definitely looks nice, but not my type of game.
-On the way out of the convention hall for lunch we passed an incredible Dark Souls III statue and a Tomb Raider interviewing Elsa?
-Off to lunch at the Elephant & Castle Pub under the Motif Hotel, and I ran into IGN’s Daemon Hatfield. Second celebrity sighting of the day.
-After lunch, the plan was to get hands-on with a notable game. Today: Homefront: The Revolution. But first I passed Max Scoville and Brian Altono among the crowded hallways. They looked like they were busy so I didn’t bother them; 3rd and 4th celebrity sighting. Also before reaching Deep Silver’s ground, we walked past the YouTube Gaming panel and watched Gus Sorola, Greg Miller, and Ashley Jenkins talk it out.
-After a short wait in the Homefront line, we sat in a small theatre to preview the provided demo before given hands on. The demo itself was the same as present at E3 this year, but prolonged and with commentary explaining each step, gameplay feature, and objectives. We were then released onto our own dedicated hand-on playthrough machines, and given free rein.
-Playing off a PC build with controller in hand, we got to play through the E3 2015 demo. Starting with the introduction of the objective to interrupt a patrol. Retreating is a gameplay mechanic encouraged at times because we can very easily become overwhelmed by the stronger enemy. Their units are more heavily armed and they have aerial scouts and trucks. Our own weapon modification ability is very cool. Probably through crafting in the real game, we can swap out gun parts and modify our gun on the fly. Swapping out sights, or grips, or even the barrel for something useful in the situation. Molotovs are featured heavily, and there is a hacking grenade available to take out the drone scouts, reversing their enemy logic. RC remote car bomb is also a handy toy.
-The city is very open, and there are vehicles, like motorcycles available to use. Lots of ramps and stairs to utilize, and climbing plays a part in the exploration of the city.
-The build we played seemed pretty flushed, but still early. Pre-alpha, with an indication of a Spring 2016 release. The game feels a lot like Far Cry, which is not a complaint.
-Last up for my day was some shopping. I was able to grab the full set of Borderland Pop Vinyls from the 2K store, and another Castle Crasher knight from the Behemoth store – an annual tradition – as Tom Fulp, Dan Paladin, and Will Stamper are on hand daily to autograph the way they know how: hilariously.
-And then the Pink Knight showed up, in coincidental fashion, and made everyone’s time a good time.
-Pizza and a movie to wrap the day in the windy, pouring rain. Until tomorrow, Day 3.
